Unions begin with you

When working people come together, they make things better for everyone. Joining together in unions enables workers to negotiate for higher wages and benefits and improve conditions in the workplace. There are millions of union members in America from all walks of life. These individuals know that by speaking up together, you can accomplish more than you could on your own.

How unions work

Getting a union started usually means working with an existing union to show that the majority of workers at your employer want to form a union.  We call that organizing.

Unions are really teams of individuals coming together to guarantee the things you care about like decent wages, affordable health care, job security, safe and respectful workplaces, and fair scheduling.

Unions are democratic organizations. As union members, we  elect our leaders, who are responsible for advocating, organizing, and representing members to get what we all need on the job.

  • Better Pay and Benefits

Union members earn better wages and benefits than workers who aren’t union members. On average, union workers’ wages are 22% higher than their nonunion counterparts.

More than 75% of union workers have jobs that provide health insurance benefits, but less than half of nonunion workers do.

Unions help bring more working people into the middle class. In fact, in states where people don’t have union rights, workers’ incomes are lower.

  • Secure Retirement

Working people in a union are five times more likely to participate in an employer-provided pension plan than working people without a union.

  • Productivity

Unions help employers create a more stable, productive workforce—where workers have a say in improving their jobs.

Unions also provide a voice on the job, which is something that money can't buy.

Unions Are Democratic Bodies

Union members democratically elect their leaders who are then responsible for advocating for the good of the unit.
